Matchdays

A travelogue of UK non-league football games: the journey there, the view from the touchline and something to eat along the way.

  • National Notoriety.......

MATCH DETAILS EMIRATES F.A. CHALLENGE CUP - 2nd Qualifying Round Saturday 19th September Woodford Town v Mulbarton Wanderers What started off as a humble qualifying round game ended up in major controversy and an F.A. led enquiry into the result. Woodford Town is a local ground for me to get to, it’s around 30 minutes…

  • An introduction......

Hello, my name is Ian and I'm a 54 years old footy fan from London. Now you may think that I love the Premier League and all it's attendant hyperbole and bullshit. Totally wrong . You see I'm a fan of the underdog. I love the FA Cup and the fact that a small non-league club can take on the giants of the game and sometimes beat them to great acclaim. David  slaying Goliath if you like. In this blog, I shall take a peek into the grassroots of the game, people that play the game for a few quid, but essentiallyfor fun. That doesn't distil the crunching tackles, the occasional mass brawl and match officials being criticised (just like thetop level!) I shall endeavour to give the reader a flavour of the sights, the sounds, the smells (of food!) and the general atmosphere of football at the lower, but in my opinion, better levels. The blog will be a warts and all travelogue of all things non league football. Please follow and enjoy the ride!

At the food stall

A hot dog. A paper tray. Another part of the matchday.

Football journeys have their quieter moments, too. A stop at the snack counter offers a different view of the afternoon: simple food, a pause from the action and the pitch still close by.

There is room in this journal for what happens between the big moments.
